The Homelessness Trap – Why It’s So Hard To Get Off The Streets

Homelessness is a complex issue that affects thousands of people across the UK. At Reconnected, we see firsthand the myriad of challenges that individuals face when trying to escape life on the streets. Our mission is to not only provide immediate relief but also to address the underlying issues that perpetuate homelessness – let’s delve into some of the critical factors that contribute to the homelessness trap and why it’s so challenging to break out of it.

Mental Health

Mental health issues are both a cause and a consequence of homelessness. According to Crisis, 80% of people who are homeless or sleeping rough are combatting a mental health issue. This staggering statistic highlights a vicious cycle: homelessness can exacerbate mental health problems, and these problems can make it incredibly difficult to escape homelessness.

Anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions can impair judgment, hinder job performance, and erode the social support networks that are crucial for finding and maintaining stable housing. Without adequate mental health care, many individuals find themselves stuck in this cycle, unable to access the resources they need to get back on their feet.

Housing Costs

The current cost of living crisis has made it even harder for people to secure and maintain housing – many people across the UK are feeling the impact of rising prices, and it’s not shocking to find out that homeless individuals are struggling too. In fact, Shelter reports that almost 2.5 million renters are either behind on their rent or constantly struggling to pay it, an increase of 45% since April 2022. This financial strain not only drives more people onto the streets but also makes it extremely difficult for those already experiencing homelessness to find affordable accommodation. High rents and stagnant wages create a barrier that keeps many people from transitioning out of homelessness, as they simply cannot afford the cost of housing even if they manage to find stable employment.

Housing Availability

Even when financial barriers are overcome, the availability of suitable housing remains a significant issue. In autumn 2023, an estimated 3,898 people were counted as sleeping rough across England on a single night. This is more than double the number of people sleeping rough in 2010, highlighting not only the severe shortage of affordable and accessible housing, but the increasing need for resources to help combat rising homelessness. The lack of available housing means that even those who are ready and able to move off the streets will likely struggle to find a place to live. This scarcity of housing options exacerbates the homelessness crisis, leaving many with no choice but to remain on the streets.

Resources

Access to resources is another critical challenge for homeless individuals. Without internet access, it can be nearly impossible to find information on available services, job opportunities, or housing options. Digital connectivity is vital for making those struggling with homelessness aware of the help and resources that exist. Many homeless individuals rely on the kindness of friends, family and strangers to navigate these obstacles, but this is not a reliable or sustainable solution. Without adequate access to information and support, many people remain trapped in the homelessness cycle, unaware of the resources that could help them change their circumstances.

The Reconnected Mission

At Reconnected, we recognise that homelessness is not a one-size-fits-all issue. There are multiple factors that can keep people on the streets and prevent them from getting back on their feet. This is why we treat each case with the care and consideration it deserves. Every individual’s story is different, their barriers to getting off the streets are unique, and everyone deserves the chance to be heard and helped.

Our approach goes beyond simply providing housing. We offer a comprehensive support system that includes employability and development programs. By addressing the root causes of homelessness and providing the necessary support, we help individuals build a foundation for a stable and secure future. We understand that solving homelessness requires more than just a roof over one’s head; it requires a holistic approach that considers the various challenges that individuals face.
