What If a Door Could Change Everything?
Homelessness doesn’t just take away a home. It takes away safety. Stability. Dignity. Confidence. And for many, hope.
And with one in 200 households in the UK experiencing homelessness right now, there has never been a more dire need for the support, compassion and hope that we can bring.
At Reconnected, we see the devastating impact of homelessness every day — and we also see the extraordinary resilience of the people who walk through our doors. People who’ve experienced trauma, crisis, or years of instability, but who still carry the spark of what’s possible.
That’s why our approach is simple, but powerful: we start with a door. A real door. One that opens to safety, security, and a second chance.
We call this campaign: Adopt a Door – Change a Life. And it’s not just a slogan — it’s a truth we see lived out again and again in our hubs.
Why a Door?
Because a door means more than shelter. It’s privacy. Safety. Personal space. Something that is truly, undeniably yours.
For someone who has been rough sleeping, sofa surfing, or moving between temporary hostels — often for months or years — a secure door to close behind you is life-changing. At Reconnected, every person we support has their own room with their own key. This isn’t a shared dormitory or emergency night shelter. It’s home.
But it’s not just the physical door that matters. It’s what lies behind it.
What Happens Behind the Door
Behind every door in a Reconnected hub is a person working to rebuild their life. And alongside them is a team committed to helping them every step of the way.
Each person arrives with a different story — some have left care, others have fled violence, lost jobs, battled addiction, or experienced mental health crises. But no matter their journey, they’re met without judgment.
We begin with the essentials: food, clean clothes, toiletries, a bed, a key. And then we build a tailored plan around each individual’s needs. That support might include:
- Registering with a GP or dentist
- Replacing lost or stolen ID
- Connecting with mental health or recovery services
- Accessing therapy or trauma support
- Applying for benefits or employment
- Budgeting, saving, and managing debt
- Building life skills — cooking, cleaning, shopping
- Applying for housing or training
We also help people reconnect with estranged family or loved ones, and rebuild support networks in the community.
Every person has their own journey. Some stay for a few weeks. Others are with us for many months. However long it takes — we’re there.
What Makes Reconnected Different?
Our hubs aren’t just about survival — they’re about growth, independence, and human connection. We don’t put a time limit on support. We don’t treat people as numbers. We work with them as people.
We currently operate two hubs in Birmingham:
- Lower Essex Street Hub – Our city-centre location, close to vital services and transport
- Rotton Park Road Hub – Our newest space in Edgbaston, housing 11 private rooms in a peaceful, purpose-designed building
Together, these hubs have supported over 300 people into more stable, secure lives.
How the “Adopt a Door” Campaign Works
This year, we’re inviting individuals, families, businesses and community groups to be part of that transformation by sponsoring a door — or a full hub.
We’ve created a set of giving options that make a real, measurable difference:
£25 – Fresh Start Pack
Covers a welcome kit, warm meal, and basic travel for a person’s first day
£50 – Step Forward Fund
Provides food and utilities for a week, plus a 1:1 keyworker session
£100 – Empowerment Pack
Supports interview clothing, skills training or therapy access
£500 – Adopt a Door
Fully sponsors a resident’s room, with wraparound support. Includes your name or company name displayed on the door.
£1,500 – Adopt a Hub
Covers core running costs of one of our two hubs for a month. Your name will appear at the hub entrance.
Where Your Money Goes
We’re often asked: “Where does the money actually go?”
It goes to the real costs of running safe, supportive spaces:
- Heating, water and electricity for the hubs
- Food, toiletries, welcome packs, and cleaning supplies
- Staff costs for keyworkers, admin and care staff
- Maintenance, laundry, furnishings and transport support
- Support sessions, training and outreach services
In other words, it goes directly to making change happen.
We’re a small charity with a focused mission. Every penny is used carefully, transparently, and with impact.
Why Now?
Because the crisis is growing.
Birmingham has over 16,000 people currently experiencing homelessness. Many are hidden — living in unsafe accommodation, on sofas, in cars, or on the street. We see the rising need every week.
And with costs of living rising, funding pressures mounting, and mental health needs soaring, the support we offer is more critical than ever.
Why It’s Personal
This campaign isn’t just about raising funds. It’s about humanising homelessness. Reminding the world that every person you pass on the street has a name. A story. A dream.
When you sponsor a door, your name is a symbol. It says, “I see you. I believe in you.”
We’ve watched service users arrive silent, anxious, unsure — and leave with a job, a home, a smile. And while we don’t always get to share individual stories, we can tell you this:
It works.
