Why We Do What We Do

Homelessness is one of the most visible and urgent social issues facing cities across the UK, and Birmingham is no exception. In fact, according to Shelter, Birmingham is home to almost 12,000 homeless individuals, with 1 in 96 Birmingham citizens being classified as without permanent accommodation. There has never been a greater need for homelessness support than right now – which is why Reconnected are here to bring those across the city out of the cycle of homelessness.

With a mission to leave the communities we serve better than when we found them, Reconnected’s work focuses not just on providing immediate shelter but on fostering long-term change in the lives of those experiencing homelessness.

According to Fred Duncan, Operations Director here at Reconnected, “The intention behind Reconnected was to do things a little differently.” He emphasises that while there are many homelessness charities in Birmingham, Reconnected approaches the issue with a distinct perspective: “We look at people as people – not numbers.” This philosophy forms the foundation of everything Reconnected does, ensuring that each person is seen for their humanity and potential, rather than as a mere statistic in the homelessness crisis.

Providing Shelter and Support

Unlike many charities that focus solely on temporary solutions, Reconnected provides accommodation directly to individuals in need. Over the years, we have offered both shelter and support to more than 250 people, many of whom have gone on to secure permanent housing across the West Midlands. For these individuals, Reconnected has been a lifeline, and we are incredibly proud to be able to offer vulnerable individuals when they need it most.

But Reconnected’s work doesn’t stop at offering a roof over someone’s head. Our support services are tailored to help individuals transition back into society, with the goal of breaking the cycle of homelessness. This involves a range of initiatives from helping individuals apply for jobs, securing long-term accommodation, and even assisting with mental health support. By looking at the whole person, rather than just their housing situation, we ensure that our efforts have lasting impact.

Filling the Gaps in a Struggling System

Homelessness in the UK has been exacerbated by a variety of social and economic factors, with government austerity measures playing a significant role. Fred notes, “Since austerity in 2010, local authorities were defunded – Reconnected are now a stopgap to pick up where the system is lagging.” With local councils and services stretched thin, charities like Reconnected have become indispensable, stepping in where government programs fall short.

While the government is committed to finding long-term solutions to homelessness by building more homes across the UK and actively tackling inflation, there remains little hope for short-term help without the intervention of non-profit organisations such as Reconnected. Our charity fills this gap, offering not only accommodation but also the support necessary for people to rebuild their lives.

With Birmingham City Council announcing the largest local authority budget cuts in history at the start of 2024, the need for charities such as Reconnected to step in has never been more necessary. What’s more, the recent cost of living crisis has only worsened the situation for those already living on the margins. Debt charity StepChange unveiled that two in 5 households are struggling to keep up with bills and credit commitments as costs soar, leaving many people homeless or on the brink of homelessness.

With inflation impacting even the most basic necessities, many across Birmingham and the wider UK are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. “It is almost impossible to feed adequately,” Fred explains, highlighting the dire circumstances many face today. In response, Reconnected works in partnership with Fair Share to provide surplus food to disadvantaged individuals and communities. This collaboration ensures that those in need not only have shelter but also access to nutritious meals, a vital component of their overall well-being.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Homelessness is a complex issue, and while organisations like Reconnected are doing everything they can, the scale of the problem requires broader community involvement. The first step is awareness: learning about the challenges people experiencing homelessness face and understanding the systemic factors at play. In fact, if you’re reading this blog, you’re already taking the most important step.

For those looking to make a more tangible difference, donations are one of the most impactful ways to help. Whether it’s financial contributions or donating items like food or clothing, every bit helps Reconnected reach more people and provide the essential services needed. With more resources, we can expand our operations and accommodate even more individuals, offering them the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Be a Part of the Solution

The homelessness crisis may seem overwhelming, but by supporting organisations like Reconnected, individuals can play a direct role in changing lives. With over 300,000 homeless individuals across England, the need for change is urgent, and with community support, Reconnected can continue to make a difference in the lives of Birmingham’s most vulnerable.
