Behind the Doors: What Our Hubs Really Do
When people think of homelessness, they often picture tents, sleeping bags, or doorways. But the truth is more complex — and more hidden. Many people experiencing homelessness are sofa surfing, trapped in temporary accommodation, or living in fear, without safety or routine.
At Reconnected, we offer something different: long-term, supported accommodation designed to help people move forward with dignity and confidence. Our hubs are not shelters. They are stepping stones.
What Is a Reconnected Hub?
A Reconnected hub is a residential building with private, self-contained rooms for people who are ready to leave homelessness behind — but who still need support to move forward.
Each room has a door, a lock, and a key. It belongs to the person staying there. It’s their own space to rest, reflect, recover and rebuild.
But a Reconnected hub is also so much more than a building.
It’s a team. A community. A wraparound service.
Our hubs include:
- A full-time support team
- Access to 1:1 caseworkers
- Shared kitchens and laundry areas
- Communal spaces to build friendships and reduce isolation
- Links to healthcare, benefits, education, training and housing
Where Are Our Hubs?
We currently operate two hubs in Birmingham:
Lower Essex Street Hub
Located in the heart of the city, this hub offers central access to services and transport. It supports a high volume of residents who need to be near to key community services and resources.
Rotton Park Road Hub
Our newest hub, opened with significant investment, provides 11 private rooms in a calm, residential setting. It offers a quieter environment for people in recovery or with more complex needs.
Each hub has been designed with safety, dignity and independence in mind. They’re not short-term shelters. They’re places where lives get rebuilt.
Who Do We Support?
There is no single path into homelessness. Everyone we support has a different story.
We work with people who:
- Have experienced rough sleeping or sofa surfing
- Are leaving care or institutional settings
- Have fled violence or unsafe environments
- Are recovering from trauma, addiction or poor mental health
- Have lost jobs, relationships or support systems
What they all have in common is a need for time, space and support. And that’s what we provide.
What Happens in a Hub?
From the outside, it might look like a block of flats. But on the inside, transformation is happening every day.
When someone moves into a Reconnected room, they receive:
- A welcome pack with food, toiletries and essentials
- A clean, safe space of their own
- Immediate support from our team
In the days and weeks that follow, we work together to:
- Rebuild routine and confidence
- Connect with key services
- Begin recovery or therapy
- Access education or employment support
- Plan a pathway into independent housing
We don’t impose time limits. We work at their pace. Some people stay for a few weeks, others for many months. The goal is always the same: long-term change.
Why It Works
By combining secure housing with personalised care, Reconnected helps people break the cycle of homelessness for good. Because people need more than a roof. They need to feel safe, respected, and supported. Our model is:
- Person-centred — built around each individual’s needs
- Trauma-informed — recognising the impact of past experiences
- Community-driven — reducing isolation and building connection
- Outcome-focused — helping people achieve real, lasting change
We’ve supported over 300 people into safer, more independent lives — and we’re just getting started.
How You Can Help
Our hubs run on care, commitment, and community support. Every donation helps keep our rooms warm, our staff funded, and our service users supported.
Whether you give £25 or £1,500, your gift keeps the lights on and the doors open.
